It’s been another busy and rewarding week across Essex, with our team supporting people with sight loss, building community connections, and celebrating achievements.
Monday saw the whole team come together to review plans for the rest of the year. We also enjoyed a team lunch to celebrate Tommy’s internship with Support 4 Sight before spending the afternoon working through our organisational strategy.
On Tuesday, Zsuzsi and Tommy spent the day at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, raising awareness of the support and services we provide.
Also on Tuesday, Sharon, Jackie and Kraken the guide dog visited Forest Hall School to deliver an interactive workshop on sight loss and the work of Support 4 Sight.
“The students really enjoyed the sessions and the feedback from them has been wonderful,” said Callie, Admissions and Careers Lead.
We’re looking forward to returning soon with our simulation spectacles to help students gain an even greater understanding of sight loss.
Paul from AbilityNet completed his first session at our Saffron Walden Sight Hub, supporting eight attendees to build confidence with the digital skills they use on their mobile phones.
Sharon and Sue attended the TEC Showcase at Chelmsford Racecourse, where visitors explored a range of technologies designed to support independent living.
Sharon also joined more than 40 attendees at the ECL Sensory Awareness Week online conference, themed “Small Ripples of Action Create Waves of Change.” The event showcased inspiring examples of inclusive practice, including:
• A care home that has transformed support for residents with sensory loss.
• Newcastle Football Club’s innovative haptic technology, allowing blind and partially sighted supporters to experience the atmosphere of live matches through specially designed shirts.
After opening remarks from former RNIB CEO Matt Stringer, the first presentations from the Get Set Progress interns got underway.

Have Your Say – Essex Sight Loss Council
Amy Askew, who leads the Essex Sight Loss Council, is inviting blind and partially sighted people to join an informal discussion and complete a short survey.
Monday 6 July, 1:30pm, Kingsland Church, Colchester
The discussion will focus on the issues that matter most, including transport, health services and the built environment. Your feedback will contribute to a national picture of the experiences of people with sight loss and help inform the Thomas Pocklington Trust’s priorities over the next three years.
