Support 4 Sight took part in a workshop at the museum to select three objects from the museum’s vast archives to be featured in the upcoming exhibition, Wonders: 190 years of Saffron Walden Museum.
The Wonders exhibition will showcase a curated selection of unique and awe-inspiring items from the museum’s extensive collection, celebrating 190 years of history and culture. During the workshop, Support 4 Sight worked alongside museum staff, Charlotte and Simon to help choose objects that reflected the spirit of the local community. The workshop gave participants the opportunity to engage with history and culture in a new and meaningful way. The participants explored the museum’s archives and offered feedback on which objects resonated most with them.
“We were thrilled to partner with Saffron Walden Museum for this project, building on the work we did together in the History of Colour back in 2022” said Elizabeth Cowell, Outreach and Communications Coordinator of Support 4 Sight. “This collaboration was an exciting opportunity to make culture and history accessible to all. It allowed those with sight loss to have a direct influence on the museum’s exhibition, encouraging a broader audience to experience the wonders of history, art, and culture in an accessible and engaging way.”
Charlotte Pratt, Learning and Outreach Officer said “The whole team is really excited about this exhibition, its design is rooted in community engagement, participation, and accessibility. We want the public to share the delight and wonder that we, in the Museum team, get to experience every day, working with the very special objects that the Museum holds in its collections. It’s been a real delight to start the process this week. The group from Support 4 Sight really engaged with the process and thought so carefully about how their selections would enrich the exhibition for all our visitors. I can’t wait to see what other objects are chosen in the following weeks.
Throughout April the museum will be working with groups from across the district to develop a collaboratively curated exhibition that celebrates the diverse perspectives and interests of its local community. The exhibition will open on Saturday May 10th with a fun filled birthday party!”
The Wonders exhibition will open on May 10th 2025 at Saffron Walden Museum, where visitors will be able to explore the rich history of the museum’s collections, including the three items chosen by the Support 4 Sight workshop participants.
Support 4 Sight uses these to determine and underpin all that we do. Through this we work towards a common purpose ensuring that we offer services which enhance the quality of life and social involvement of people with sight loss.
