Thursday 23rd January saw Lee Rolfe’s Blindfolded Goalkeeper Challenge take place at Cambridge United Football club training ground on Bentley Road, Cambridge.

Lee, his mum and dad, Paul his carer, and Liz Sandwell from Support 4 Sight started off being given a tour by Luke Ellerby, the Assistant Club Secretary. They were shown around the indoor training facilities, seeing rooms such as the debriefing room, boot room and gym. Lee then got his boots laced up and sound football (with bells in) at the ready, and they made their way out to the pitch to watch the last part of the team in their training session.

They got to meet the players as they walked off the pitch and managed to get a group photo.

As Lee started to warm up and practise his passing skills, the heavens opened! Nevertheless, Louis Chadwick, the chosen goalkeeper, put on his blindfold and got into place in the goal.

Lee scored a total of 20 penalties, of which Louis saved about 5! The goalkeeper coach, Martin Davies was analysing every save and every goal. Louis commented when they had finished ‘It was horrible’ highlighting the difficulty of the challenge. Lee thoroughly enjoyed completing this challenge, even if he was soggy from the rain.

Liz, Outreach and Communications Coordinator said, ‘Thank you to Cambridge United Football Club for making this happen, and for making us feel so welcome on the day. The challenge really highlighted the barriers people living with sight loss come across whilst taking part in much loved sports.’

Lee has raised around £500 for Support 4 Sight in this amazing fundraising challenge. Well done Lee!
