Ernest Scasbrook
Support 4 Sight would like to say a big thank you to Chris and Shirley Scasbrook who very generously donated a large range of visual aids that assisted Ernest Scasbrook, Chris’s father, when he became Visually Impaired in later years. Sadly Ernest recently passed away. Chris very kindly thought of Support 4 Sight and asked if we could make use of the equipment. We are so grateful for the thought and will ensure that the equipment will be put to good use to help our members and service users. Please follow the link to read the short brief account of Ernest’s life.
Paul’s Dare Devil 4 x 4 Off Road Drive.
On Sunday 27th June 2010, Paul Atkins Support4Sight’s Centre & Volunteer Manager, got behind the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery to carry out his Challenge to drive Blind around the exhilarating and very demanding 4x4 offroad course at Wildtracks, Newmarket. Colleagues and friends from the charity, alongside Nessie Paul’s Guide Dog, stood and watched in amazement as Paul steered the vehicle with the aid of his instructor Malcolm over the rough terrain. Paul experienced some hair raising and death defying moments which he and Malcolm will remember for a very long time! Said Malcolm Swan “I have been told that I must be brave to take out Paul. My reply is that on the two occasions teaching Paul off-road driving, it has been both a pleasure and honour, for it is he that is the brave one. My hat goes off to him, for he is showing others what some would say is impossible - is indeed possible”.
After the event Paul said “This is one of the most challenging activities I have undertaken, the concentration needed to complete the drive was something that I have never experienced with all my other adventures. I’m not sure how I am going to top this one I am looking forward to doing some more off roading with Malcolm in the future. I would like to thank everyone for supporting me and to all those who came along on the day to witness this terrifying experience. Extra thanks to Malcolm for his patience and Wildtracks for allowing me this opportunity. Also my thanks go to Katy Badger for being brave enough to sit in the back of the vehicle leaping in and out taking action photos of some of the most dramatic moments and also some embarrassing ones!”If you would like to see more pictures of the day please click on this link.

Thriplow Daffodil Weekend
Members, Staff & Volunteers visited Thriplow on Saturday 20th March and enjoyed music and dancing from the Morris Men and browsing many of the stalls. We also enjoyed a good walk up the hill to the church to join a service then listened to a really interesting talk on the 900-year history of the church. Ex House of Commons Speaker Betty Boothroyd who was in the congregation very kindly agreed to join us for a group photograph in the grounds.
Due to the winter being hard and long the Weekend could only muster a few daffodils but many of the group purchased the small potted ‘Tete e Tete’ from a stall as a memento before heading home.
R A Butler School Children Visit Support 4 Sight
On Wednesday 3rd, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th March 2010, approximately 75 children (spread over the 3 days) from the Saffron Walden R A Butler School visited Support 4 Sight’s Resource Centre. The reason for their visit was to get a better understanding of equipment and how it is used and how it can help Visually Impaired People cope with every day living. Paul Atkins (Centre & Volunteer Manager) with his Guide Dog Nessie, welcomed the children to the centre. Paul demonstrated and talked about Nessie, the symbol and long cane. The children had a chance to try out these items as well as talking clocks & watches and have fun with the colour detector. As the children left, they said thank you, patted and said Goodbye to Nessie as they left the centre. We hope that they all learnt from this experience with Support 4 Sight and will be more aware of the needs of people with a sight impairment.

On Friday 19th February 2010, Support 4 Sight held a Family Fun Day at its Resource Centre in Saffron Walden with the children’s entertainer Mr Rainbow. It is so important to raise the awareness of Visual Impairment to children at an early age. Mr Rainbow performed twice during the morning and the children were also able to meet the Guide Dogs, guess what is on the tactile board, play games on the computer, play with tactile games designed for visually impaired people and finally take part in a drawing competition for which there was a prize for the 2 winners. A great day was had by all of the children and adults. If you would like to see pictures of everyone enjoying themselves, please visit our photo gallery.

Charity Sponsored – Sunday 3rd May
Support 4 Sight’s Director, Madeleine Cassidy and Chairman, Iris Evans, are undertaking a Sponsored Abseil down Harlow Water Tower on Sunday 3rd May – a distance of 110 feet! This event is organised by Harlow Rotary Club and is an annual event which is very successful. Hundreds of organisation and charities have raised money this way.
So far Madeleine and Iris have been sponsored over £700 but they are hoping to raise at least £1,000 for Support 4 Sight. Sponsorship forms have been circulated to members, family and friends, and visitors to the centre have been asked to contribute. Letters have been sent to all local shops asking for their help with sponsorship.
Charity Director, Madeleine Cassidy admitted to being somewhat nervous about the undertaking:
“When the abseil was mentioned to me, I thought “No problem! But to be truthful, now that the date is drawing closer, I’m getting much more nervous! After all, 110 feet is a long way down!”
Funds are needed to run our centre in Saffron Walden and to provide home visits to people who are losing their sight and becoming blind.
On Tuesday 10th November 2009, between 10 am and 2 pm, Optelec along with Dolphin Computer Access, will be at the Support 4 Sight Resource Centre to demonstrate some of the latest equipment and technology to assist Visually Impaired People to live a more independent life. Also on Tuesday 10th November 2009, between 10 am and 4 pm, Action for the Blind Bus will be parked in the Market Square. Why not come along and meet the team from Action for the Blind and get some of those burning questions answered.
If they can't answer them, they will point you in the right direction to get the information you require. On board the bus will be the latest technology to assist Visually Impaired People.
We look forward to welcoming you to both of these events. For further information, please contact Paul on 01799 523700. If you get the Voice Mail, we will get back to you.

Family Fun Day
“Magic in their Eyes” - Family Fun Day at Support 4 Sight on Thursday 30th July 2009.

The old adage “never work with children and animals” was ignored by staff at Support 4 Sight, when we held a Family Fun Day at our Information Centre last week. The Charity, Support 4 Sight, held a Family Fun Day for local families on 30th July, with special quest appearances from the children’s entertainer, Mr Rainbow. We were so inundated by families that it was standing room only for parents, while children crowded around the popular magician for two 50 minutes shows. The day kicked off with fun activities for children, all of which were linked to eyes and sight loss. As well as the chance to meet Mr Rainbow, the children had the opportunity to meet guide-dogs, play with talking computers, write their names in Braille, play with toys for children with poor vision and enter a colouring competition. The colouring competition had been distributed to local schools and entries were displayed in the front window of the George Street centre. They were judged and the two winners of the colouring competition were Sophie Bloyce and Tillie Warner, whose pictures are being displayed in the front window of the charity’s Centre.
The aim of the fun day was to raise the profile of sight loss amongst local families and to grow awareness of the importance of Support 4 Sight’s work. The charity helps over 2700 local people with issues about sight loss and the event was sponsored by Heart Radio and Uttlesford District Council. In fact, Heart Radio’s mobile team (Heart Angels) were on hand to support the Fun day and they gave out free stickers and sweeties to children.
If you would like to see more pictures, please follow the link to the photo gallery.
New Kid on the Block
Alan Chamley has joined Support 4 Sight as Services Co-ordinator. Alan lives in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, having been brought up near Halstead. Alan is married with two sons, and has the eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa. This does not stop him from enjoying many social activities such as cricket and ten pin bowling with other visually impaired people, watching football (favourite team is AFC Sudbury), playing steel pans, doing Pilates, and singing with the Whittlesford Community Gospel Choir. He even completed a 65 mile trek in the Sahara Desert in March this year, an event organized by the British RP Society to raise funds for research into the eye condition.
“I am really pleased to be working with – and for - everyone connected with Support 4 Sight, and am grateful for the welcome that I have received from you all”.
Volunteers News
I would like to say thanks to everyone who took part in the Volunteer Sponsored Walk and raised the fantastic sum of £703.50. Also well done to Geraldine and her merry band of supporters that assisted at the Hellions Bumpstead Village Fete raising the grand sum of £180. Our thanks also go to Andrew Streeter (Trustee) and Mark Pivac, (Member) not forgetting Blaze (Marks Guide Dog), for very kindly agreeing to open the Ashdon Mini Fete. Our share of the proceeds is estimated to be approximately £1,100.
We are celebrating our 15th Anniversary this year and Nicola Smith came up with a great idea to decorate the centre’s window to show how the year is being celebrated. Next time you are in the centre or passing, please take the time to have a look. Well done to Nicola and her assistants.
Concert By Candlelight

Support 4 Sight hosted a spectacular evening to celebrate the launch of a special membership scheme. Entitled “Friends of Support 4 Sight” the scheme was launched at St Mark’s College in July at a concert entitled “Concert by Candlelight”. It marked the first occasion for local people to sign up to become an official “Friend”, which is open to anyone who donates at least £10 per annum to the charity. The evening also coincided with the announcement that Lady Braybrooke has agreed to become Support 4 Sight’s Patron. Support 4 Sight’s Concert by Candlelight was an “Eye-Opening” treat, as musicians Quintus Benziger and Ann Holloway with soprano Anita McKenzie-Mills delighted the audience. Lord & Lady Braybrooke, Lord Petre, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex (The Queen’s representative for the county), Cllr Alastair Walters (chair of Uttlesford District Council) and the Mayor of Saffron Walden Cllr Doug Perry were amongst the guests who enjoyed the musical recital. The audience revelled in the song choices, specially selected for Support 4 Sight, which contained a selection of pieces; the names of which included the words “Eye” or “See” such as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” or were written by a blind composer. There was also an especially composed piece, written for Support 4 Sight by Quintus Benziger, celebrating the bi-centenary of Louis Braille. The new membership scheme is open to local people, who will receive invitations to future events and newsletters. Anyone interested in becoming a “Friend” of Support 4 Sight should contact Christine Marshall on 01799 523700 for information.
If you would like to see more pictures of the evening, please follow the link to our picture gallery.
Read House, Frinton-on-Sea
On Friday, 26th June 09, 25 members, 5 volunteers and 2 staff headed off to the Essex coast, for the annual visit to Read House, Frinton on Sea.
Our hosts, Essex Blind Charity, once again provided lunch of fish and chips followed by spotted dick.
The weather was pleasant, and much less dramatic than the thunderstorms occurring in Saffron Walden at lunchtime. Though a little hazy whilst we were walking, we enjoyed a very pleasant time along the sea front or sitting in the neat, pretty gardens of Reed House. We then tucked into a delicious cream tea, before heading back to base.
Our special thanks go to Pat Arnold and to the volunteers – Nicola Smith, Madelaine Debnam, June Bruniges and Jane McKie - who gave up such a long day to help, and without whose presence this event could not have run so smoothly and effectively.
Our Annual General Meeting
Our AGM took place on Wednesday 1st July at 11.30 am at Uttlesford District Council’s Committee Room. The formal part of the meeting was taken up with reports on the past year from our Chairman, Iris Evans, Director Madeleine Cassidy and, with Trustee Pat Arnold giving the financial report for 2008-2009 on behalf of Treasurer, Martin Ormondroyd. We were also delighted to learn that Miriam Hardwick had been welcomed as a new Trustee. The members present voted unanimously to re-elect Iris Evans as Chairman, Graham Routledge as Vice-Chairman, and the remaining Trustees, namely Martin Ormondroyd (Treasurer), Sue Schneider (Clerk), Andrew Streeter, Pat Arnold and Sabira Ladha. We are profoundly grateful to our Trustees for their continued support.
There followed an interesting 20 minute talk by Gary Raynor, the Development Manager at Telecare, Essex County Council. Gary explained and demonstrated equipment used for safety in the home, such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, pendant alarms, and devices that trigger an alarm when the wearer moves from upright to a prone position, thus detecting whether the wearer has had a fall.
Award winning local charities put Saffron Walden in the spotlight.

Saffron Walden featured prominently at the recent High Sheriff’s Awards, thanks to Support 4 Sight. During a special ceremony, the High Sheriff of Essex, Mrs Sarah Courage, met with almost 50 community groups, including Support 4 Sight and awarded certificates and grants towards their projects.
Support 4 Sight were among the community projects, charities and individuals from the whole county of Essex to receive awards from the High Sheriff of Essex, to fund projects that make Essex communities safer from crime.
Madeleine Cassidy, Director of Support 4 Sight, collected their cheque for £500, alongside volunteer Peter Whitehead. The charity is delighted that the High Sheriff Awards recognised the importance of Support 4 Sight’s home visiting scheme to local visually impaired people. Our volunteers conduct many home visits to visually impaired people and can give advice on ways of coping with sight loss. Our Volunteer, Peter Whitehead, received an individual award for his five years of voluntary work for the charity.
Following the awards at the event, Madeleine Cassidy and Peter Whitehead met the Mayor and Mayoress of Saffron Walden, Cllr Mike Hibbs and Cllr Hillary Shibata, who congratulated both groups on their success and their work in local communities.
Musical Recital
On Sunday 22nd March at Radwinter Church, Quintus Benziger (piano and organ) and Tristan Stocks (baritone) gave a recital which raised £226 for Support 4 Sight. The music was varied, with pieces from Handel, Mendelssohn and Debussy among other composers. It was greatly enjoyed by everyone who attended. Our grateful thanks to Ann, Quintus and Tristan.
Shepreth Wildlife Park
On 22nd May fourteen members, volunteers and staff enjoyed an interesting day out at Shepreth Wildlife Park. This family run park, with its wide range of animals, birds and reptiles set in attractive surroundings near Royston, provided plenty of opportunity to walk round spotting some exotic creatures such as tigers, mountain lions, meerkats and lemurs. One of the highlights of the day was the chance to hold an owl (see picture).
Charity Ball
The Charity Ball was a great success.

The centre staff were all in their best finery. To see other photos from the night please click HERE.
St Valentine’s Open Morning for Families
And who said “never work with animals and children?” It simply isn’t true! We had a great experience with both, when we held an Open Morning for children and their families on St Valentine’s Day at our Centre in George Street. The event was launched some weeks earlier with a colouring competition, which was distributed to local schools and children were asked to colour in and name a Guide Dog. The aim of the day was to raise awareness of the help available to youngsters with sight problems and show the children and their family members and friends around the Centre.
Half Term week provided a good opportunity for the children and parents to visit us and we showed a range of educational sensory and tactile toys. Volunteers also demonstrated the talking computer software and arranged tactile guessing games. The children and their parents were introduced to Roza and Ingrid, two Guide Dogs, who regularly visit the centre with their owners.
As part of the morning’s events, several of the children had their names produced in Braille to take home and it was good to see so many youngsters showing a keen interest in the subject of low vision. Squash and biscuits were enjoyed by all the children and the morning was great fun with the volunteers and staff enjoying the event every bit as much as the visitors.
The winners of Best Colouring Competition were Georgia Dorrian aged 9 and Dillon Lewis age 6. The winners for Best Names were Harvey Stevens aged 4 (with “Seymour”) and Ciara Bailey aged 5 (with “Specs”). The winning entrants can be seen displayed on our front window.

Visit to Great Bardfield Vineyard
A party of 12 Members and Volunteers went to Great Bardfield Vineyard on Monday 29th September. We were very lucky to have had a sunny and warm day, and were treated first of all to a talk about the Vineyard by the owner, Mr Jordan. He then took us on a tour of the Vineyard and told us about the process of wine making. We then visited the Barn which was built in the 1500’s while Anne of Cleves lived there. Afterwards we had a wine tasting of 4 of the different wines produced by the Vineyard and that was followed by a delicious lunch.
It was a most enjoyable day and some of us bought a bottle (or two) of wine to remind us of our visit.

Our exhibition on Tuesday 28th October at the Town Hall was a very successful event, with 11 suppliers taking part, plus displays from Talking Newspapers and Guide Dogs. Many thanks to the volunteers (Geraldine Brown, Pat Arnold, Liz Marson and her friend Reg) for their help on the day. (And well done to Jane for her first successful trip!)

Musical Treat at Coffee Morning
At the coffee morning on 24th June, we were entertained by the Duck End Duo, who played the piano and clarinet. They brought with them 2 singers, who gave us a selection of songs from the shows and popular songs such as “The Lambeth Walk”.
This was such a success that they have been booked to sing and play at the Christmas coffee morning on Tuesday 16th December.
Frinton
A wonderful day was had by all when we visited Frinton-on-Sea on 30 July. Two minibuses and one car loaded with members and volunteers set off from Saffron Walden about 9.30 am. After a warm welcome at Read House, operated by Essex Blind Charity, we were served a delicious fish & chip lunch followed by dessert. Afterwards we walked along the esplanade and went for a paddle in the sea. We certainly worked up an appetite for our cream tea & scones in the afternoon.
It was a long and enjoyable day out for members and their appreciation was evident from the comments we received. It would not have been possible to take them without the volunteers who gave up their whole day to accompany us.

We were delighted that in October 2007 Support 4 Sight finally moved into its new premises. The relocation was made possible with the help of local firefighters, who spent an entire afternoon carting heavy boxes and equipment to the new facility in George Street, Saffron Walden. Thank you so much! We are delighted to be in our new home at long last.

“£Pound for LB” Sponsored Slim
Members of the public are being called on to get in shape by Saffron Sight, who this week announced that it is holding a sponsored slim, entitled “£Pound for LB”. The event seeks to highlight World Sight Day on Thursday 12th October. World Sight Day aims to draw attention to sight loss and blindness and is celebrated on an international basis. This year’s theme is Low Vision, citing that many people are visually impaired from causes that are totally preventable.
Saffron Sight wants to encourage local people to look after their sight, which could prevent sight loss. The sad facts are that many forms of sight loss are preventable and that there are many positive steps we can take to safeguard the health of our eyes. Regular exercise and a sensible diet are directly related to good eye care. To raise awareness of these important messages, the charity is holding a Sponsored Slim, entitled “£Pound for LB” (sponsorship form). Saffron Sight’s Sponsored Slim runs for 4 weeks from Monday 16th October.
Simply weigh yourself on Monday 16th October and again on 13th November. If you get sponsored £10 per lb and manage to lose 7lbs in that time, you’ve earned £70 for Saffron Sight and lost half a stone! That’s enough to pay for Saffron to visit and support two elderly visually impaired people, who are losing their sight. To kick start the event, members of the public are invited to come along to Saffron Sight’s Resource Centre on Monday 16th October, from 10am for an official “Weigh-In” at 3 Central Arcade, Saffron Walden. Funds raised from the Sponsored Slim will be used to improve Saffron Sight’s Resource Centre and will go towards its recently launched “Relocation Appeal”.

Day trip to Frinton for Saffron Sight’s Members
Many local visually impaired people were treated to a special day at the seaside, thanks to local charity Saffron Sight. At the end of July, the Saffron Walden based sight-loss charity, organised a day trip for thirty visually impaired members and companions to the seaside town of Frinton, on the Essex coast. For some members, many of whom do not have regular holidays, this day was a wonderful treat.
For the day, Saffron Sight called on the services of Uttlesford Community Transport, who provided two mini-buses, which travelled in convoy from Saffron Walden to Frinton for the day. Its visually impaired members and especially trained volunteers who accompanied them, were treated to a fish and chips lunch, before heading to the seafront for a stroll.
In order to offer the day-trip to its partially sighted and blind members, Saffron Sight organised many fundraising events. It was also given donations from the Saffron Walden Rotary Club and the Saffron Walden Visually Handicapped Club for organising social trips.
Comments Madeleine Cassidy, director of Saffron Sight, “It was wonderful to see so many of our visually impaired members having fun and enjoying their day-out. We are pleased to have organised the event, with the support from our friends at the Rotary Club and Visual Handicapped Club and hope to offer more social events and trips over the forthcoming year”.

Saffron Walden Mayor gives £7000 to his charity Saffron Sight
To celebrate his year as Mayor, Cllr Dr Richard Freeman presented Saffron Sight with a cheque for £7,008.73 last Thursday, which are funds raised over the past year.

Initially undecided to choose a Mayoral Charity, Dr Freeman chose Saffron Sight because of the good work the charity undertakes in the local community, to help people who are losing their sight. Saffron Sight, based in Central Arcade, has a resource centre, where people with partial sight can get help, advice and support to cope with their daily lives.
With the help of other councillors and a team of fundraisers, who worked tirelessly on the appeal, a mixture of events was organised for the Mayor’s Appeal. From a sponsored walk, coffee mornings, open days, car boot sales, a quiz night and street collections, many people donated their time and energy to help the Saffron Walden based charity.
In his speech, Cllr Dr Freeman thanked Saffron Sight’s volunteers, other Councillors including Cllr Chris Bayley, Cllr Steve Jones and his wife Mrs Carole Jones, Cllr Vic Lelliott and Mrs Christine Lelliott, who organised many of the events. He also thanked Mrs Jan Moore, his Mayoress for her support throughout the year.
The money will be used to fund the operation of Saffron Sight’s Resource Centre, which has just announced that it has longer opening hours. The Centre is now open for five hours each day, Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 2.30pm.
Madeleine Cassidy, Director of Saffron Sight, collected the cheque and thanked the Mayor and Mayoress, at the Reception last week. “We are honoured to accept these funds from the Mayor and thank him for his support, along with everyone that has helped Saffron Sight over the past. We been have very fortunate in having such wonderful support and with the assistance of our dedicated volunteers, we will continue to offer our services to local visually impaired people, coming to terms with their sight loss”.

Visual Impairment awareness talk to St Thomas More School, Saffron Walden
Graham Routledge (Saffron Sight Trustee), his guide dog Ingrid and Paul Atkins(Resource Centre Manager), also with his guide dog Roza gave a talk to the children in assembly about living as a visually impaired person and how they overcome the every day problems that they have to cope with when living with sight loss.
Paul and Graham talked about their guide dogs and how they assist them to get around at home and in town. They also explained the things that you shouldn’t do when you see a working guide dog. Paul explained what the children should be aware of and what it means when they see a person with a symbol cane, guide cane or long cane as well as a guide dog.
The children were fascinated by the talk and guide dogs Ingrid and Roza, both of whom received a great deal of fuss. Many questions were asked by the children during the talk and on our tore of the class rooms after assebly.
If you would like to see the pictures from the event, please follow the link to St Thomas More School’s website.
To finish, a few quotes from the children once Graham and Paul had left the school:
"I was amazed how the dogs just ignored all the children as we came into the hall"
"Paul and Graham smiled a lot"
"I loved the dogs, they are very clever"
"When Paul was talking I forgot that he was blind, which is good"
"I put my hand up to ask a question then I remembered they couldn't see us. I felt silly"
"I think Paul and Graham were fantastic. They didn't look sad at all"
Saffron Sight to benefit from the Stansted 10K Fun Run
Saffron Sight is pleased to announce that it has been named as a local beneficiary of the Stansted 10k Fun Run. The Fun Run, which is held every two years, is being held on Sunday 2nd July at 11am and local people are encouraged to participate. The aim of the Run is to raise funds, which they will donate to charities. Saffron Sight is one of three charities the event's organizers have agreed to support this year.
More information about the Fun Run can be obtained at their website.
Award for Saffron Sight
Saffron Sight has won an award for its volunteers’ scheme and was awarded a prize of £1,000 by the High Sheriff of Essex, Mrs Jenny Tolhurst. Since the High Sheriffs’ Fund was established with Essex Community Foundation in 1997, it has distributed over £100,000 to 152 charities. In March, a special ceremony, sponsored by Essex County Council and organised by Essex Community Foundation, was held at the Fennes Estate, Bocking.
The Volunteer Bureaux of the Year Award, launched at the Awards in 2002 by George Courtauld, was won by Saffron Sight. The Charity has received £1,000 for its volunteer scheme for providing support, respect and training it gives to its volunteers. Monica Johnston, one of Saffron Sight’s volunteers who nominated them for the award said “I feel privileged to be a small part of such a worthwhile and friendly organisation”.
Dave Monk, the leading radio personality from BBC Essex, compered the event for the fourth year running. In true “Oscar” style, Dave invited winners to receive Certificates and cheques from the High Sheriff and talked to them about their work, helping the audience to gain a greater understanding of the varied activity that is taking place across Essex to make our communities safe from crime and the fear of crime.

BBC Radio Essex - interview by Ray Clarke
On 15th March Madeleine Cassidy and Paul Atkins of Saffron Sight were interviewed by Ray Clarke from BBC Radio Essex (click here to hear the interview) and the interview broadcast on the Drive Time show later that evening - for further details see below.
Ten pin bowling
On Wednesday 15th March, Saffron Sight members and volunteers were treated to a free ten pin bowling session in Cambridge. The party of twelve ventured on a trip to Ten Pin Ltd in Cambridge for a free game of 10 pin bowling. Visually impaired members and partners were accompanied by sighted volunteers who made sure that the trip ran smoothly. Ten Pin Ltd also provided a dedicated member of staff from 10 Pin Ltd, who has been specially trained in supporting visually impaired people and assisted Saffron Sight’s members during our time bowling.
Things heated up when the party was divided in two teams, who competed for the highest scores. Barriers were used on the lanes and members excelled themselves with very high scores. In fact, many members scored strikes!
To add to the excitement, just before the game commenced, Madeleine Cassidy and Paul Atkins of Saffron Sight were interviewed by Ray Clarke from BBC Radio Essex and the interview broadcast on the Drive Time show later that evening. In fact BBC Radio Essex kindly sent a tape of the recording to the charity (click here to hear it).
Saffron Sight will continue to provide a range of social activities throughout 2006. If you would like to take part in future 10 pin bowling events or other events, please contact the Viv Tree at the Saffron Sight’s Resource Centre on 01799 523700.

Working Together to Train Visually Impaired People
Saffron Sight has announced the launch of Computer Training Courses for visually impaired people. The charity is offering this new service in Uttlesford and invites all visually impaired people who are interested in courses on computing and using the Internet to contact them.
Saffron Sight has close links with another low vision charity, Cam Sight, which covers the Cambridgeshire area and along with other services, has offered computer training for visually impaired people for several years. Inspired by their success, Saffron Sight has worked hard over the past year to expand its I.T. services.
Specialist software makes it possible for blind and visually impaired people to use computers and access the Internet. Madeleine Cassidy, Director of Saffron Sight, comments “Visually impairment should not be a barrier to learning computer skills, something which many employers require these days. We hope that many visually impaired people across all of Uttlesford, including Great Dunmow, Stansted and Saffron Walden, will participate. Our thanks go to Orange Community Futures, Voluntary Sector Training, Uttlesford District Council and Press Relief for their support in this project”.
Jerry Gilbert, the I.T. tutor from Cam Sight, is coming to Saffron Sight and will be providing computer tuition to two visually impaired volunteers at Saffron Sight. The initial course will last ten weeks and is being supported by Voluntary Sector Training in Uttlesford. It is hoped that further courses will be organised later, subject to demand and available funding.
Shelley Gregory-Jones, the Chief Executive of Cam Sight said “We were delighted when approached by Saffron Sight to offer training to more visually impaired people. We believe that this is a great model of how two charities can benefit by working closely together”.
This course would not be made possible without grants from many organisations, including Orange Community Futures, Uttlesford District Council and Cambridge Evening News Press Relief. In particular, Linda Riley of Voluntary Sector Training comments, “We were very pleased to be part of this project and are committed to supporting the training and development needs of voluntary organisations, including those with sensory impairments. We hope it will encourage visually impaired people back into the workplace, either as volunteers or in paid employment”.
The training is one of a series of new services that the charity hopes to organise for visually impaired people in Uttlesford this year. Any visually impaired person who is interested in learning about future courses should contact Paul Atkins (Resource Centre Manager) on 01799 523700.

It is hoped that Cllr Mayor Freeman will join the stroll, as part of this year’s Mayor’s Charity Appeal. The aim of the stroll is two fold. Obviously the stroll will help to raise much needed funds. However, Saffron Sight believes it is important that visually impaired people participate in community events and remain active for as long as possible. Anyone interested in participating or sponsoring the walkers should contact the Resource Centre on 01799 523700.
September '05 - Saffron Sight holds Open Days
On 13th September Saffron Sight held an Open Day at its Resource Centre in Central Arcade, Saffron Walden to highlight the launch of its website. Saffron Sight is delighted to announce that its Blind Bowls Team has begun training at the Turpin’s Indoor Bowls Club. The Team consisting of many local blind and visually impaired players, meets on Saturdays and has been in training since the start of May. Saffron Sight wants to encourage further visually impaired people to consider joining and advises those with sight problems to be as active as possible. In particular, the charity believes that tailor-made sporting and social activities designed specifically for visually impaired people, where they can participate alongside others of the same ability, is very important. In addition Saffron Sight would like to hear from people who can volunteer some time to assist with the Bowls training sessions. This includes guiding and assisting visually impaired people and full training will be given for this role.
